Profile- Mathura "Brij Bhoomi"
Mathura is considered one of the holiest places in India. Known as the birthplace of Krishna, Mathura is home to a unique ‘Braj’ Culture. It is one of the oldest known cities in India, having references in the Ramayana. With famous temples like the Banke Bihari Temple, Rang ji Temple and Iskcon Temple, its raaslila's are part of Indian folklore. Millions of devotees visit the various sites of cultural and religious reference in the Mathura district, including in Vrindavan, Goverdhan, Gokul and Mant. The Yamuna ghats, the temples, ashrams and kunds have visitors around the year and on special occasions like the Purshottam Maas, Ardh Kumbh celebrations.
With a population of 2,541,894 according to census 2011, the Mathura parliamentary constituency is made up of 5 Vidhan Sabha of Chatta, Mant, Goverdhan, Mathura and Baldev. Mathura has a strong agrarian backbone with almost 269 hectares of net sown area. It is a centre for animal husbandry with a number of dairy cooperatives, and research and education institutions related to the science and practice of animal husbandry. Notably, Mathura is home to the Uttar Pradesh Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Veterinary University, a first of its kind veterinary university in the country. The Central Institute for Research on Goats (CIRG) is also a premier research Institute of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) at Makhdoom, in the Farah Block.
As Mathura comes under the Taj Trapezium Zone, Industry in Mathura has to comply with strict mandatory pollution guidelines. The Mathura Refinery is one of the biggest in Asia, and has recently earned the international benchmark of ISO 14064 – Greenhouse Gases Verification Statement. Mathura is also famous for it's textile printing and silver polishing industry.
Mathura is also fast developing as a major hub for engineering and management colleges, with more than 40 such colleges. Recently a private State University was also established in the district.
